The SoR in Secondary Planning Challenge will take teachers through five modules to learn about integrating the Science of Reading research into their secondary classrooms while planning engaging lessons.
This challenge uses Scarborough’s Reading Rope as a framework for understanding how we can TEACH and actually build comprehension for our secondary students.
In module 1, teachers will learn about the key components of the Science of Reading Research as it applies to secondary classrooms and prepare to plan their unit over a curricular text.
In module 2, we will continue to work together and learn from each other. We will look at ways to integrate word-level tasks into our every day, tier 1 instruction while maintaining a high level of learning for our secondary students.

In module 3, teachers will understand the importance of sentence level work and how much it aids in comprehension. I will also offer you a vertically aligned blueprint from grammar instruction, per the Common Core State Standards. Finally, we will explore ways to integrate grammar and syntax into our reading instruction.
Module 4 deals with paragraph level work and will help teachers understand the part that text structure plays in inferential thinking and verbal reasoning. We will also look at ways to integrate paragraph writing into our reading instruction.
Finally, module 5 gets into whole text concepts that will help students comprehend, including background knowledge and fluency.

This free planning challenge will go live on August 4th, with the modules dropping each morning at 8 AM CST. Sign up for the challenge and grab your challenge guide here.
