First, the video for the module is in your email. Then, you can navigate through the actual module tasks here with all of the necessary links. Finally, at the bottom of the page, you’ll find the slides that I used for creating this module. Remember to use the Facebook group!
This module is all about sentence level work and how powerful syntax can be when it comes to comprehension. An inadequate understanding of sentences is where so many of our students’ comprehension breaks down.
Additionally, this module includes TWO new blog posts! First, we’ll think about actually teaching grade appropriate grammar and then we’ll look at how we can accomplish teaching, reviewing and integrating grammar by using the text itself.
Task 3.1:
First, simply review this blog post and choose one topic to either teach or review with your students. This will be in addition to your reading unit.
Wait, what does that mean, Allison? Well, think about it this way, we can’t look at how appositive phrases help us to understand characters in the story that we’re reading if we don’t know what appositive phrases are… So think of this task as the background knowledge necessary to talk about it in relation to the text.
Task 3.2
Share your thoughts in the comments of the grade appropriate grammar blog post. Do these topics align with what your school does?
Task 3.3
This takes task 3.1 a little farther. Plan a grade level grammar progression for this reading unit. What topics will you need to review and teach new? Don’t try to do it all, though. Remember you have all year and there are only a few things on your grade appropriate list. You can take your time but make a plan for this reading unit (and beyond, if you feel like it!).
Task 3.4
As a bonus task for today, share your favorite way to teach a grammar topic in the Facebook group.
Task 3.5:
Find at least five sentences from the text that you could use as mentor sentences to teach your grade appropriate grammar topic. Look back at the Text Complexity Planner at what you identified as being potentially confusing for your students. If you don’t have something that fits, maybe try reviewing the text itself again.
Task 3.6
Now, choose a sentence level activity from this blog post or shared in the Facebook Group to add to your unit plan. Make sure to add any necessary materials or tasks to your to-do list.
Tasks 3.7:
This one is extra. You get to add points to your scoreboard and be entered to win the Markers and Minions planner!
