Before we begin, I would like to go over some logistics. This module does explain your first few tasks but also includes an overview of the challenge, as well.
As you are navigating the challenge pages, know that the explanation video will be in your email. Then, you can navigate through the actual module tasks here with all of the necessary links. Finally, at the bottom of the page, you’ll find the slides that I used for creating this module. Remember to use the Facebook group!
You will need to have an understanding of Scarborough’s Reading Rope in order to understand why each of these modules is important. I use the reading rope as my framework for planning. It is an integral part of the body of research known as Science of Reading.
Task 1.1:
Read or reread the text you will be using for the challenge. This seems super simple. But I don’t want you to read it like the skilled reader that you are… I want you to read it with your students in mind. What words are they going to struggle with? What little things does the author expect the reader to already know that you will have to build background knowledge for your students? What sentences are you going to have to help your students decipher? As you are reading and thinking about these things, you can complete task 1.2.
Task 1.2
Use the Text Complexity Planner that came with your challenge guide to decide how you will read this curricular text with your students. Think about what they will need in order to really access and comprehend the text. I strongly suggest printing the worksheet and writing on it! Use this over and over again.
Task 1.3
This is a fun one! Introduce yourself in the Facebook Group and tell us what text you are using for the challenge. Let’s make this a social event. And don’t forget to give our sponsors some love. =)
