#SoRin2ndary Planning Challenge Module #4

First, the video for the module is in your email. Then, you can navigate through the actual module tasks with all of the necessary links. Finally, at the bottom of this page, you’ll find the slides that I used for creating this module. Remember to use the Facebook group!

This module relates to paragraph level work, which has implications for text cohesion, and it gets into making inferences.

Inferential thinking can be done at every single level of reading: words, sentences, paragraphs and whole text. We often associate it with whole text level work, though. So let’s take a step back and think about it in relation to some of the smaller components of reading.

Task 4.1:

First, identify one paragraph from your text that has 3-5 opportunities to point out the use of pronouns, substitutions, homophones and/or synonyms. These are all opportunities to teach local inferences and, therefore, build inferential thinking skills.

Decide how you will integrate this into your lesson plans. Will it be an activity for students to complete or will you simply point it out to students?

Can you use a word-level or sentence-level activity that we’ve discussed this week to teach this? Make sure to add any necessary materials or items on your to-do list.

Task 4.2

Choose an activity from Eight Paragraph Level Reading and Writing Activities or something that has been shared in the Facebook Group to add to your unit plans.

Task 4.3

Share an idea of your own for teaching reading or writing paragraphs in the Facebook group.

Task 4.4

Identify one paragraph that has the opportunity to point out text structure and transitions. By doing so, you’ll be helping your students better understand how authors create text cohesion, which is one of the biggest reasons why texts become more complex.

Decide how you will integrate this into your lesson plans. Will it be an activity for students to complete or will you simply point it out to students?

Can you use a sentence-level activity or a writing activity to teach this? Make sure to add any necessary materials or items on your to-do list.

Task 4.5:

Plan to review the purpose of the text structure used in your curricular text or text structure, in general.

Task 4.6

Choose at least one writing activity from the blog post to integrate into your lesson plans.

Tasks 4.7:

Share a celebration and/or question related to the challenge so far in the Facebook Group. Let’s cheer each other on.
